New Delhi: The Lieutenant Governor of Delhi Najeeb Jung took a meeting with the Senior Officials of the Delhi Government at the Raj Niwas today to review the preparedness for the monsoon, particularly the status of de-silting of drains in the NCT of Delhi.
The meeting was attended by the Chief Secretary, Secretary (Finance) Secretary (Irrigation and Flood Control Department), Secretary (PWD), Secretary (Environment and Forest), Secretary (Urban Development), Commissioners of Delhi Municipal Corporations (North, South and East), CEO (Delhi Jal Board) and other senior officers.
The Secretary (Irrigation and Flood Control Department), Secretary (PWD), and Commissioners of North, South and East Delhi Municipal Corporations and CEO, Delhi Jal Board made their respective presentations to the Lieutenant Governor about the preparation for the monsoons, including preparation to tackle floods in the river Yamuna and other nallahs, as also preparation to tackle sudden cloudbursts and heavy rainfall during the monsoon. They highlighted the work done so far in de-silting drains and nallahs, as also operations put in place including pumping stations to pump out water from waterlogged areas, setting up of control rooms, identification of vulnerable areas etc. Information pertaining to the work done with respect to de-silting of drains has also been posted online on the MCD website .
The Lieutenant Governor has instructed that all work pertaining to de-silting of drains must be completed by the 15th of May. He has called for a review of the work done together with a status report by mid may. He said, “The preparations for monsoon must start much in advance so that the government is ready in all respects to tackle all eventualities.”
The Lieutenant Governor also instructed that the PWD and Municipal Commissioners must ensure that their Chief Engineers and Superintendent Engineers continuously monitor and assess the situation on the ground from the middle of May till the end of the monsoon season in September. He instructed the departments to assign responsibilities and submit the same to him at the earliest.
Jung added, “There must be better intra-departmental coordination between the municipalities, the PWD and the Irrigation and Flood Control Department.” He said, “All control rooms set up by different governmental agencies must be able to address the queries of the respondents, irrespective of whose jurisdiction it falls under.” He instructed the departments to build a much better intra-departmental coordination for smooth re-dressal of queries during the monsoon. Shri Jung said that the government must be prepared in all respects to tackle the situation of flooding and water-logging during the monsoons by the middle of May.
