It is believed that during this month Lord Shiva consumed the deadly Halahal poison that came out during the Samudra Manthan to save the universe. According to Hindu mythology, many divine things came out of the ocean during the Samudra Manthan, but they also included Halahal, which was a dangerous poison. To save the world from its effect, Lord Shiva drank the poison and kept it in his throat, due to which the poison turned blue and he was named Neelkanth.
According to Shiva Purana, devotees who offer water on Shivling in the month of Sawan get special virtue. In this month, devotees walk on foot carrying holy water and offer water to Lord Shiva. According to Shiva Purana, it is believed that doing so is considered a means of cooling and pleasing Lord Shankar. Along with this, every Monday of Sawan has special significance and by doing so, Shiva gets pleased quickly and fulfills the wishes of the devotees.
To reduce the effect of the poison, the gods offered Ganga water to Lord Shiva. This divine incident is believed to have happened in the month of Shravan. Therefore, this month is dedicated to Shiva devotion and worshipping him during Sawan is considered especially fruitful. It is said that the gods poured Ganga water on Shiva to reduce the effect of the poison and this act of devotion continues through special worship and fasting during Sawan. It is said that Lord Shankar stopped the effect of that Halahal poison on his throat and hence Lord Shankar is also called Neelkanth.
