Mumbai comes alive with the myriad hues of Assam Sankaradeva Movement

<span style="font-size: large;">Mumbai: Sankaradeva Movement started out as an ambitious attempt to promote the ideals of the 15 thcentury saint Sankaradeva and to propagate the culture of Assam across India. The Third edition of the movement, which is promoted by Trend MMS, the reputed Socio Cultural Trust of Assam, was held in Mumbai today in collaboration with NCPA, well known for promoting Art and Culture in the country.</span></div>

<span style="font-size: large;">The event, which promised to be bigger and better than ever before, turned out to be an unqualified success thanks to the love and support it received from all quarters. Entrepreneur and Cultural Activist, Mr. Shyamkanu Mahanta, the organizer of Sankaradeva Movement said, “Mahapurush Sankaradeva, the greatest Assamese of all time was a versatile personality - a saint, poet, dramatist, actor, sculptor, painter and most importantly a social engineer who united the heterogeneous society of Assam. </span></div>

<span style="font-size: large;">The morning saw a discussion on the relevance of Sankaradeva in Modern India in which eminent luminaries like Governor of Assam Mr. JB Patnaik, Brand Ambassador of Sankaradeva Movement –Actor Victor Banerjee, Actor Adil Hussain, reputed Vaishnavi scholar Dr. Sunil Kothari, Bhaskarjyoti Mahanta, eminent writer and Addl DGP, Assam & Swapnanil Baruah, Commissioner, Cultural Affairs Deptt, Govt of Assam participate with great gusto. </span></div>

<span style="font-size: large;">Eminent actor and brand ambassador of Sankaradeva Movement, Victor Banerjee said, "The Sankaradeva Movement is a novel initiative to propagate the ideals of the great scholar saint. Having been associated with the initiative for the past 3 years, I can see the movement taking a definite shape. His teachings which spoke about secularism and inclusion in the true sense, have a lot of relevance in today's times."</span></div>

<span style="font-size: large;">Hon'ble Governor of Assam Shri JB Patnaik said, "Srimanta Sankaradeva appeared as a unifying force for the people of Assam - he was a great spiritual leader, a social reformer, an architect of Assamese language and literature, composer, dramatist, musician, dancer, painter and above all a great humanist. We cannot think of Assam without Srimanta Sankaradeva and I am glad Sankaradeva Movement is doing yeomen's service in promoting his teachings in different parts of India and particularly in Maharashtra, the home of many saints and spiritual leaders of India."</span></div>

<span style="font-size: large;">In the evening, a grand cultural programme was organised to showcase the colorful culture of Assam. The star-studded function was an evening to remember with some spellbinding performances in the presence of celebrated personalities from the film industry like Hariharan, Pritam,Lalit Pandit among others. The reputed Marathi singer Ashwini Bhide Deshpande and Bhajan Samrat Anup Jalota enthralled the audience with Borgeet in the function.</span></div>

<span style="font-size: large;">Dance Drama Chordhora Jhumura was performed by top Assamese actresses like Barasharani Bishaya, Tanvi Sarma & Mallika Kandali under direction of Dr. Nirupoma Mahanta. Famous Naga Folk singer Guru Rewben Mashangva rocked the crowd with his mesmerizing Naga folk blues in a unique fusion performance along with Kalpana Patowary. Sunita Khaund Bhuyan filled the evening with her lilting violin strains as she performed Bihu. The function was sumptuously rounded off by Assam’s heartthrob Zubin Garg. Few outstanding Assamese cultural personalities in Mumbai like Amrit Pritam, Dhrubajyoti Phukon, Debojit Changmai, Jatin Sarma were also felicitated during the event.</span></div>

<p>New Delhi: Third edition of Sankaradeva Movement is all set to organize on 18 th May at NCPA in Mumbai. It would be a daylong programme, in the morning a discussion on relevance of Sankaradeva in Modern India would be addressed by reputed Vaishnavi scholars like Dr. Sunil Kothari, Governor of Assam Mr. JB Patnaik, Flimmaker and top police officer Bhaskarjyoti Mahanta, Actor AdilHussain, Brand Ambassadors of Sankaradeva Movement – UstadAmjad Ali Khan & Actor Victor Banerjee etc.</p>

<p>It is noted that Mahapurush Sankaradeva, the greatest Assamese of all time was a versatile personality. He was a saint, poet, dramatist, actor, sculptor, painter and most importantly a social engineer who have united the heterogeneous society of Assam. However, the multifaceted genius hasn’t got his recognition outside Assam. Sankaradeva Movement is an ambitious attempt to promote the ideals of Sankaradeva and the culture of Assam across India. It is promoted by Trend MMS, the reputed Socio Cultural Trust of Assam in collaboration with NCPA, the well known for promoting Art and Culture in the country.</p>

<p>Trend MMS have been taking many landmark initiatives to promote Assam and North East India. Recently, Trend MMS organised North East Festival at Delhi wherein for the first time 8 North Eastern joined hand to promote its culture and highlight various issues. Earlier, Trend MMS organized Samannay, wherein leading singers of Assam travelled across Assam to promote harmony and love.</p>

<p>In 2012, Sankaradeva Movement was organised in Delhi, in 2013, in Bengaluru with support from Assamese community in these areas. Both these events got widespread publicity in National and regional media and got attention from all quarters.</p>

<p>This year, it is being organised in Mumbai’s most famous cultural destination, NCPA Auditorium, Mumbai on 18<sup>th</sup> May, 2014. In the evening a Grand Cultural Programme is organised showcasing the colorful culture of Assam. The reputed Marathi singer Ashwini Bhide Deshpande and Bhajan Samarat Anup Jalota would perform Borgeet in the function which would be hosted by famous TV presenter Mr. Sidharth Kak.</p>

<p>Entrepreneur and Cultural Activist, Mr. Shyamkanu Mahanta who is driving these initiatives informed that through Sankaradeva we are trying to showcase Assam, its egalitarian society. Mr. Mahanta informed that at a time, when Assam is facing conflicts, distrust amongst communities, it is an attempt to look inward and also to highlight Sankaradeva and the culture of the State across India.</p>

<p>Mr. Mahanta also informed that some of the Bollywood top personalities have already confirmed presence during the event apart from top intellectuals of Mumbai. Assamese community in Mumbai is actively involved in inviting and organizing this iconic initiatives, considered biggest ever event to promote Assam outside. </p>

Book 'Deewan-e-Shaida' released under Jamia's A.M.Khwaja Chair

<p>New Delhi: Prof. S.M. Sajid, Offg. Vice-Chancellor, Jamia Millia Islamia (JMI) released a book <b>“<i>Deewan-e-Shaida</i>”</b> edited compiled by Prof. Shahzad Anjum of Department of Urdu, Jamia Millia Islamia published under Jamia’s A.M. Khwaja Chair of Jamia Millia Islamia in a Book Release Function.</p>

<p>On the occasion, Prof. S.M. Sajid, Offg. Vice-Chancellor, JMI, in his remarks, said “I am feeling very happy to release of “<i>Deewan-e-Shaida</i>” and said “The poetic sense of Abdul Majeed Khwaja gave evidence of profound maturiy. In poetry, his pen name was Shaida”.</p>

<p>Prof. M.H. Qureshi, Chair Professor, A.M. Khwaja Chair welcomed the guests and audience and presented the activity report of A.M. Khwaja Chair. He expressed his pleasure on the publication of “<i>Deewan-e-Shaida</i>” and said “Prof. Shahzad Anjum has done editing of this book voluntarily because of his love towards Jamia”.</p>

<p>Prof. Khalid Mahmood put Shaida’s poetic distinction in perspective with reference to his <i>Deewan </i>and Prof. Shahzad Anjum shed light on the life and works of A.M. Khwaja Shaida while Mr. Rajan Habib Khwaja, former Secretary, Ministry of Tourism, Government of India talked about Shaida’s personnel life and commitments. Mr. Rajan Habib Khwaja handed over a few valuable manuscripts of A.M. Khwaja to the Vice-Chancellor of JMI.</p>

<p>Prof. Sabiha Zaidi from Jamia’s Premchand Archives and Literary Centre expressed her happiness at the publication <i>Deewan-e-Shaida</i>. She detailed the work done under the aegis of Jamia’s Premchand Archive where the writings and memories of different writers and poets were preserved.</p>
