exposed to the heat; timely intervention and correct first aid can reduce the

difference when an accident occurs and proper first aid can reduce the severity
of a burn appreciably. One should remove the child from the heat source and put
out any flames if the clothes have caught fire. Prevent further injury to the
skin and run cool (not cold) water over the burned area as it eases the pain,
removes heat, and lowers the temperature in the injured tissue. <o:p></o:p></span></div>

may cause the burn to take longer to heal and don’t apply butter, grease,
powder, or any other remedies to the burn, as this increases the risk of

cool compresses and a loose dressing over the next 24 hours. For Extensive or
Severe burns run under cool water for no longer than 5 minutes, wrap the wound
in a clean cloth and without any delay take the patient to the medical care

In fact, this lining can break down when exposed to high temperatures, releasing microplastics into the beverage duing serving. In the same way, research proves that the plastic or polystyrene cups also emit harmful particles when used for hot drinks.</div><div><br></div><div>A recent research by IIT Kharagpur has confirmed the existence of contaminated particles of the hot liquid served in paper cups due to the degradation of micro-plastics and other hazardous components from the lining material of the cup. The paper cups are usually lined by a thin layer of hydrophobic film which is made of mostly plastic (polyethylene) and sometimes co-polymers to hold the liquid in the paper cup.</div></span><p></p><p><span>Within 15 minutes this micro-plastic layer degrades as a reaction to hot water, says the first of its kind study conducted in India by Dr. Sudha Goel, Associate Professor at the Dept. of Civil Engineering and research scholars Ved Prakash Ranjan and Anuja Joseph studying Environmental Engineering and Management.</span></p><p><span></span></p><h4><span><b><a href="https://competitivetimes.blogspot.com/p/inspiring-thoughts.html"><i><span><span>Inspiring Thoughts</span></span><span><span>...</span><span><span>Click and Feel the</span><span> Power of Thoughts</span></span></span></i></a></b></span></h4><p><span>As Prof. Sudha Goel puts it, “According to our study, 25,000 micron-sized (10 µm to 1000 µm) micro-plastic particles are released into 100 ml of hot liquid (85 – 90 oC) residing in the paper cups for 15 mins. Thus, an average person drinking three regular cups of tea or coffee daily, in a paper cup, would be ingesting 75,000 tiny micro-plastic particles which are invisible to the human eyes”.</span></p><p><span> The researchers followed two different procedures- in the first process, hot ultrapure (MilliQ) water (85–90 ◦C; pH~6.9) was poured into the disposable paper cups and it was allowed to sit for 15 minutes. The homogeneously mixed water was then analyzed for the presence of micro-plastics as well as additional ions that may have leached into the liquid from the paper cups. In the second process, the paper cups were initially dipped in lukewarm (30–40 °C) MilliQ water (pH~6.9). Thereafter, the hydrophobic film was carefully separated from the paper layer and exposed to hot MilliQ water (85–90 °C; pH~6.9) for 15 mins. and the changes in the physical, chemical, and mechanical properties of the plastic films were examined before and after the exposure to hot water.</span></p><p><span>Explaining the exposure of 15 minutes, Prof. Goel linked its basis to a survey wherein the respondents confirmed consuming their beverage within 15 mins of obtaining it. “Besides the result of the survey, it was also observed that within this time, the beverage attained the ambient temperature,” she stated.</span></p><p><span>These micro-plastics can act as carriers for contaminants like ions, toxic heavy metals such as Palladium, Chromium, and Cadmium, and organic compounds that are similarly hydrophobic in nature thus allowing them to conveniently cross over to the animal kingdom. When ingested, the health implications could be serious.</span></p><p><span> Pondering on whether the traditional earthen products can be a more suitable replacement for such disposable items, Prof. Virendra K Tewari, Director, IIT Kharagpur pointed out, “This study shows that careful consideration needs to be done before the promotion of replacements for bio-hazardous products and environmental pollutants. We have been quick to replace plastic cups and glasses with disposable paper cups. While the need was crucial we have to find eco-friendly products. The Chief Guest of the webinar was Dr. V. Vijayalakshmi; Additional Commissioner (Academics), KVS (HQ), New Delhi and the Guest speaker was Prof. Dr. R. Somasekar, Professor of Pediatrics, Sree Balaji Medical College & Hosptial (SBMCH), Chennai, Tamil Nadu and Executive Board Member 2021, Indian Academy of Paediatrics (IAP). The program was attended by about 150 delegates including several dignitaries, faculty members, researchers and scientists, and students from various schools through the link made available on Face Book by CSIR-NIScPR.</span></p><p style="text-align: justify;"><span style="font-family: georgia; font-size: large;">Dr. Ranjana Aggarwal, Director CSIR-NIScPR, in her introductory remarks highlighted the incredible bonding between two great institutions, the Council of Scientific & Industrial Research (CSIR) and the institute with Kendriya Vidyalaya Sangathan (KVS) in the form of JIGYASA, a student-scientist connect initiative kick-started in mid-2017, with the purpose of inculcating ‘Scientific Temper’ among school students and make them science oriented”. Further, she added that the ‘JIGYASA’ has indeed created a commendable impact not only among the students, but also enthusiasm among the scientists as well. She said ‘JIGYASA’ provides opportunity for students to interact with the scientists directly and thereby motivates the young minds for innovative thinking and approach. In the long run, it is expected to deliver impressive results, especially in terms of S&T developments beneficial to the society.</span></p><p style="text-align: justify;"><span style="font-family: georgia; font-size: large;"> Dr. V. Dr. Somasekar said that the covid-19 has so far not affected children much in India but for the state Karnataka, and discussed various Covid-19 treatment options for children. Taking the session forward he suggested some measures to adopt in our day-to-day life: physical exercise, playing with kids, avoiding junk food, good sleep, wearing masks, balanced diet, and age-appropriate vaccination. He said Covid-19 in children is still moderate. Though children are vulnerable to the SARS-CoV-2 virus, still the majority of them are asymptomatic and only 1-2% had to go for hospitalization. Dr Somasekar cautioned the parents about the chances of transmission of infection from adults, and the increasing gastrointestinal symptoms among children these days. He explained how to identify and differentiate the covid-19 symptoms from other flu and common cold. Dr. Somasekar said that the covid-19 has so far not affected children much in India but for the state Karnataka, and discussed various Covid-19 treatment options for children. Taking the session forward he suggested some measures to adopt in our day-to-day life: physical exercise, playing with kids, avoiding junk food, good sleep, wearing masks, balanced diet, and age-appropriate vaccination. The recommendations for the public on ‘holistic health and well-being’ focus on preventive measures and care during ‘COVID-19 and Long COVID’-19’, the Ministry said in a statement.</span></p><p style="text-align: justify;"><span style="font-family: georgia; font-size: large;"> COVID-19 is an evolving disease and characterised by the development of sequelae to the primary disease known as Post-Covid syndrome and Long Covid-19. It has been observed that patients recovering from SARS-CoV-2 suffer from persistent and often, debilitating symptoms extending several months past their initial diagnosis,” a ministry official said.</span></p><p style="text-align: justify;"><span style="font-family: georgia; font-size: large;"> The document puts forth the concept of holistic health, which emphasizes the self-care of the individuals by addressing various dimensions of life and health. These recommendations on “holistic health and well-being” have been formulated emphasizing the need for a healthy lifestyle with Ayush preventive measures and care in respect of Covid-19 and Long Covid-19.</span></p><p style="text-align: justify;"><span style="font-family: georgia; font-size: large;">General preventive measures, methods for promoting systemic immunity, ways to promote local mucosal immunity along with other preventive courses such as fumigation (Dhupana) have been recommended by the Ministry.</span></p><p style="text-align: justify;"><span style="font-family: georgia; font-size: large;">Pictographic presentation for Ayush practices and local/mucosal immune responses, relationship between good and weak digestive fire (agni), nutrition, immunity, and infection, and categorical administration of diet in respect of strength of appetite (Agni) have also been incorporated in these recommendations for maximum understanding and outreach to general public.</span></p><p style="text-align: justify;"><span style="font-family: georgia; font-size: large;">Recommendations for Mental health for COVID-19 and post/long COVID-19 and measures to increase mental strength (Satvabala) are also part of the document, which were not in the previous guidelines/ advisories issued by the Ministry of Ayush.</span></p><p style="text-align: justify;"><span style="font-family: georgia; font-size: large;"> Recipes of easily digestible food (Laghu ahara) such as Moong dal (Green gram) Khichdi and Mudga Yusha (Moong dal soup) have been carefully chosen and included in the recommendations.</span></p><p style="text-align: justify;"><span style="font-family: georgia; font-size: large;"> The document has illustrations of Yoga asanas that one can practice during COVID-19 along with its photographs for easy understanding of people.</span></p><p style="text-align: justify;"><span style="font-family: georgia; font-size: large;"> The recommendations are a supplement to the COVID-19 appropriate behavior and precautionary measures and should not be taken as a substitute.
