JSW athletes shine at Glasgow: Return from CWG with 8 Medals

<p>New Delhi: The JSW Sports Excellence Program (SEP), aimed at developing a rich talent pool across sporting disciplines in the country, had a stellar role to play in India's fantastic Commonwealth Games showing in Glasgow.</p>

<p>As many as eight athletes mentored under the program returned with medals that included three gold, three silver and two bronze efforts. It was the wrestlers who led the charge with as many as seven out of the eight medals.</p>

<p>Parth Jindal, Director of JSW Sports said, "We are extremely proud of our athletes who have proved that India has the potential and will keep producing world class athletes if they are given the right backing and support. Our athletes are already reaping benefits of world-class facilities and their performance is proof enough."</p>

<p>Grappler Amit Kumar, who won gold in the men’s 57-kg category beating Nigerian Ebikweminomo Welson 3-1 said the build-up to Glasgow played vital role in his success at the Games.</p>

<p>"We didn't have to worry about anything apart from doing well once on the mat. Knowing that everything is taken care of lets an athlete put his all into training and the event and that is exactly what happened at Glasgow. We now have our sights set on the upcoming Asian Games in Korea," said Amit Kumar.</p>

<p>Certainly it was one of the major astonishing event in the ‘World of Football’ in which Brazil faces the defeat by 7-1 in such a way. The main devastated story for the Brazil was that it was forced to face the defeat in the home ground and when it has to won the cup before its own countrymen. </p>

Hockey India announces Senior Women Hockey Team for CWG 2014

<p>New Delhi: Hockey India today announced its Senior Women Hockey team for the forthcoming Commonwealth Games which are scheduled to take place at Glasgow (Scotland) from 23 July to 3 August 2014. </p>

<p>The team of 16 players were selected by Hockey India selectors Mr. B P Govinda, Mr. Harbinder Singh, Ms. Surinder Kaur along with Director High Performance Mr. Roelant Oltmans, Chief Coach Mr. Neil Hawgood and Scientific Advisor Mr. Matthew Tredrea during the selection trials conducted at NSNIS Patiala on 28-29 June 2014.</p>

<p>Midfielder Ritu Rani (179 caps) will be the Captain while defender Deepika (126 caps) will be the Vice-Captain of the team.</p>

<p>The team, post their exceptional performance against Malaysia, is in rhythm and is looking forward to the challenge of the Commonwealth Games. The women’s team will start their voyage by taking-on Canada in their first match which is listed for 24<sup> </sup>July 2014 followed by matches against New Zealand on 27 July 2014, Trinidad and Tobago on 28 July 2014 and South Africa on 30 July 2014. </p>

<p>The preparatory camp of the Indian team is currently underway at NSNIS Patiala until the departure of the team on 9 July 2014 for Scotland to participate in the Commonwealth Games 2014.</p>

<p>Speaking on the selection, Chief Coach, Neil Hawgood said, “The team showcased good play, team spirit and a go getter spirit in the recently concluded Malaysian Tour. Each one of them had performed remarkably under the proficient leadership of Ritu Rani and has earned their position to make it to the team for the all important Commonwealth Games. I hope the team continues its form during the Commonwealth Games and make themselves a team where the opponents feel the pressure of meeting them on the field”.</p>

<p>Commenting ahead of the Commonwealth Games, Captain Ritu Rani said, “It’s an honour to captain a team which is capable of beating any team on any given day. The entire team is looking forward to the upcoming tournament and we are confident that we will win and get back laurels. We are ready and excited for our first clash against Canada in our opening match.”</p>

Hockey India announces Senior Women Hockey Squad for Malaysian Tour

<p>New Delhi: Hockey India today announced its Senior Women Hockey Squad for the Malaysian Tour which is scheduled to take place from 7 June 2014 till 17 June 2014. This tour is in preparations for the Commonwealth Games and Asian Games 2014. India will be playing a six-match test series against Malaysia in Kuala Lumpur, as their build up games prior to their participation in the Commonwealth Games to be held at Glasgow (Scotland) from 23 July to 3 August 2014. </p>

<p>The squad of 21 players for the tour was selected by Hockey India selectors Mr. B P Govinda, Mr. Harbinder Singh, Ms. Surinder Kaur along with Chief Coach Mr. Neil Hawgood and Scientific Advisor Mr. Matthew Tredrea. Selection trials for the same were conducted at NSNIS Patiala on 23 and 24 May 2014. The preparatory camp of the Senior Women team for Commonwealth Games and Asian Games 2014 is already in progress at NSNIS Patiala from 14 May and will be an ongoing practice until the commencement of the Commonwealth Games 2014.</p>

Rabobank Hockey World Cup 2014: India loses 1-2 to England

<p>The Hague: India lost to England in the final minute of the match played against England of the Rabobank Hockey World Cup 2014, being played at the Kyocera Stadium, The Hague, Netherlands. India lost the match by 2-1.</p>

<p>Both the teams started by attacking each other but the first half was almost a dry run till the 27th minute when finally Mark Gleghorne opened England's account through penalty corner. While PR Sreejesh has been going through great form but this time he was unable to stop the goal and gave England the lead of 1-0. In the very next minute England’s Middleton attacked again but PR Sreejesh saved brilliantly yet again.</p>

<p>In the 30th minute this time it was India who went on the attack and Dharamvir managed to score a field goal giving India the much required equalizer. The game post that went alive as both the teams were pepped up and wanted to take the lead before going into the break. England closed in again in the final moments of the first half but Sreejesh at his best saved yet another goal and the teams went into break with 1-1 on the scoreboard.</p>

<p>Going into the second half everyone expected more goals to be scored but while both the teams tried their chances but were unable to convert the chances that they got. In the 69th minute when both the teams were aware that they were hardly 90 seconds away from the final whistle England got a penalty corner opportunity.</p>

<p>This immediately got the memories of the last match when India lost the game to Belgium in the final 15 seconds. While the defense including Sreejesh were adamant to not allow history to repeat itself with them and with great relief Sreejesh saved the penalty corner but unfortunately Simon Mantell hit back the ball and this time scored successfully, giving England the lead and the win.</p>

<p>India will take on Spain on 5<sup>th</sup> June 2014.</p>

<p>The Hague, Netherlands: Post the double injuries that have hit the Indian team ahead of the Rabobank Hockey World Cup 2014, the team is not loosing focus and is motivated as well as geared up to meet their rivals on the pitch.</p>

<p>Speaking on the upcoming challenges Goalkeeper PR Sreejesh said “Yes while we will be missing out on both Nikkin Thimmaiah and Ramandeep Singh, it has not dampened our spirits; rather we are more determined to win. We will play to win for them as their hopes are pinned on us. The first game is critical for both India as well as the Belgians. The Belgium side at The Hague is one of the most experienced team with ten players having surpassed the 100 international appearances mark but I feel that our team which is a combination of young and experienced players will give them a tough challenge. Our opening match in the World Cup will be a war between Jeremy Gucassoff & Vincent Vanasch the goalkeepers of Belgium on one side and with Harjot Singh and I on the other side. Let’s see who is able to save more goals for their country. For both of us Indians, we are up for the challenge and will ensure we are the winners. Winners for not only saving the goals but also winners in the winning team. So I think the Belgians need to think hard and strategise themselves to surpass us.”</p>

M.P. Clinches Hockey Sub- Junior Women National Championship

<p>New Delhi: Madhya Pradesh Hockey Academy defeated Jharkhand 5-2 in the finals of the 4th Hockey India Sub-Junior Women National Hockey Championship (Division A) held at Pune, Maharashtra today.</p>

<p>In the final’s match played between Madhya Pradesh Hockey Academy and Hockey Jharkhand, the opening goal of the match came from Madhya Pradesh Hockey Academy’s Preeti Dubey as early as in the 2nd minute of the game. Two quick goals collaborated by Pratibha Arya and Preeti Dubey in the 17th and 22nd minute respectively indicated the game to be in favour of Madhya Pradesh Hockey Academy. </p>

<p>The score stood at 3-0 until the whistle blew signalling the end of first half. In the 2nd half of the game, Pinki Ekka, in the 40th minute, managed to strike the first goal for Hockey Jharkhand. It was soon countered by a field goal coming in by Preeti Dubey, in the 45th minute. Nisha Rani Aind brought Jharkhand back in the game by putting the ball in the net in the 49th minute and reduced the score to 4-2. In the hard line match, played between Chandigarh Olympic Association and Haryana to fight for the 3rd and 4th position in the championship, both the teams faced a strong struggle, as they tried numerous times to strike the opening goal of the match but couldn’t thrive. At the end of the first half the scores stood at 0-0. The first goal of the match came from the stick of Shalu Mann of Chandigarh Olympic Association in the 37th minute of the game.</p>

Jyoti of Haryana stroked a penalty corner in the 53rd minute of the match, which turned out to be the first and only goal from Haryana. Manisha of Chandigarh Olympic Association transformed another penalty corner into a stunning goal the very next minute and the final scores stood at 3-1 indicating a well deserved win for Chandigarh Olympic Association over Hockey Haryana. Hence, Chandigarh Olympic Association bagged the 3rd position in the championship, leaving behind Haryana to settle for the 4th position.</p>

Hockey Odisha clinched 4th Sub Junior National Hockey Championship

<p>Ranchi: Hockey Odisha emerged as the champions and ended the tournament by winning over Haryana 3-1 in the 4th Sub Junior National Hockey Championship 2014 Men (Division A) being played at Ranchi, Jharkhand. Whereas, Punjab finished 3rd place by defeating Jharkhand with a score of 3-1 on board.</p>

<p>In an exciting match played between Hockey Odisha and Haryana, Odisha lifts the title and defeated Haryana with a mere goal margin of 3-1. The winning team showed their superiority scoring three consecutive goals in the entire match not letting Haryana to score a single goal in the first half of the game. Hockey Odisha’s Sudhir Kujur gave two back to back goals to his team pushing a penalty corner in the 5th minute and a field goal in the 18th minute of the game. Closing the first half, Hockey Odisha had a massive advantage with a 2-0 lead.</p>

<p>In the second half, Hockey Odisha did not lose its pace and scored another field goal in the 40th minute pierced by Nitin Mukesh Tigga. It seemed as if Haryana denied to enter Hockey Odisha's D until, with just five minutes to go in the match, Haryana’s Satnam scored an excellent field goal in the 55thminute. But it was too late for Haryana to open its account as the game as the victory moved to Hockey Odisha with a score of 3-1 on board.</p>

<p>In the hardline match played between Punjab and Jharkhand, Punjab edged out Jharkhand by 3-1 to seal 3rd position in the tournament. Hardik Singh hit the ball in the net in the very 1st minute and made an exciting start to the match. Jharkhand tried to level the score but could not score any. Jharkhand defended the attack of Punjab very well and did not let them score any further goals in the first half of the match.</p>

<p>The game started taking shape in the second half when Punjab scored two consecutive goals taking full control on the game. Captain Kawaljit Singh added a second field goal to the account of Punjab in the 38th minute followed by Dilpreet Singh who notched a goal in the 51st minute of the game advancing the lead to 3-0. </p>

Hockey Sub-Junior Championship 2014: Six Players found to be over aged

<p>New Delhi: In shocking incidents which certainly will damage the name and fame of Hockey in the country, six players of Hockey Haryana found to be over aged. Following a complaint from another participating team in the 4<sup>th</sup> Hockey Sub-Junior National Men Championship 2014 (Division A), being played in Ranchi (Jharkhand), for some players of Haryana being over-aged and hence did not meet the criteria of the Championship. </p>

<p>Hockey India post this complaint conducted independent medical tests and found 6 players not meeting the age bracket and because of which they were immediately disqualified to appear in further matches in the Championship.</p>

<p>According to the decisive factor to qualify for the Sub-Junior’s team, a player should be born on or after 1<sup>st</sup> January 1998. A total of 8 players went under the scanner to undergo the independent medical test conducted by Hockey India and found 6 of them guilty.</p>

Indian Men Hockey team depart for Rabobank Hockey World Cup 2014

<p>New Delhi:Indian Men Hockey Team is all set to depart for the Rabobank Hockey World Cup 2014 scheduled to be played in The Hague, Netherlands, from 31st May 2014 till 15th June 2014.</p>

<p>Speaking on the occasion<b> Dr. Narinder Batra, Secretary General, Hockey India</b> said “I wish the entire team Good Luck for the World Cup and I am sure that the team will give an outstanding performance. The team has done a lot of preparation and especially the new techniques introduced by our Chief Coach Terry Walsh have significantly improved the team’s strength and performance. I am sure the boys will give their 100 percent in every match and results will automatically be good.”</p>

<p>Commenting before the departure <b>Chief Coach Terry Wash</b> said “Team is all set for the World Cup. In the last 10 days the team’s level of sharpness has improved significantly. We have a lot of talented players and I believe that they can do wonders. A good finish at the World Cup will automatically place us at a good spot in the upcoming Commonwealth Games. The positives of the side are that we have a good combination of experienced and young players who can outperform any team in the world. We aim to play well and rock the boat.”</p>

<p>Speaking before the departure <b>Captain Sardar Singh</b> said “We are fully prepared for the World Cup and we will put in all our efforts to perform well in the tournament. We have done a lot of preparation and hard work during our preparatory camps in Delhi and it has helped us to improve a lot. Every match is important for us; especially a good performance in the first match will boost the entire team morale. Everyone in the team is fully motivated and geared up for the tournament.”</p>

<p>India is placed in Pool A of the Rabobank Hockey World Cup 2014 with Belgium, England, Australia, Spain and Malaysia. In its opening game of the World Cup, India will play Belgium on 31 May followed by England on 2 June, Spain on 5 June, Malaysia on 7 June and Australia on 9 June.</p>

<p>Mumbai: Legendary West Indies Pace Bowler Courtney Walsh inaugurates the Survadatta Fitness and Sports Academy SFSA which has been created in order to cater to the fitness requirement of the students and residents of the nearby areas. The inauguration was done by lighting a lamp as well as inaugurating a complete Gymnasium and aerobic centre at the SFSA. </p>

<p>Walsh addressed the gathering of students, faculty members and residents with his encouraging speech. He said that India have extremely good spinners however, “India can solve the problem of young pacers breaking down soon after bursting into the scene if they maintain a higher level of fitness.” He specially spoke of Virat Kohli being an impressive batsman of the Indian cricket team. Walsh appreciated the facilities being provided by Suryadatta for health and fitness.</p>

<p>Walsh visited the Suryadatta National School campus and had healthy interaction with the students and faculty of school. He took a tour of the Suryadatta campus and was very impressed by the same.</p>

4th Hockey India Sub Junior Men Championship: Karnataka beat Andhra Pradesh

<p>New Delhi: The first match today between Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh during the 4th Hockey India Sub Junior Men National Championship (Division A) witnessed Karnataka take a convincing win over the opponents. While both the teams maintained a good attack in each other but were unable to convert the chances that they got. It was finally in the 28th minute when Andhra Pradesh finally converted the penalty corner that they got and it was Sandeep Kumar who scored for the team. Just before going into the break Karnataka scored the equalizer goal in the 32nd minute coming from the stick of Abhishek Pal.</p>

<p>The second half was a battle of wits and it was to be seen which team would take the lead and put pressure on the opponents. Karnataka took the lead in the 44th minute when Binih Kiro scored a field goal and soon after in the 5oth minute another field goal was scored by Harsha Devangs taking the tally to 3-0. Binhi scored his second goal and the 4th for the team in the 54th minute taking the team to a easy win today.</p>

<p>In another match of Pool A, Hockey Odisha showered goals on Kerala and which started right at the 4th minute into the match with Suraj Minz scoring a field goal. Suraj did not stop here and within 2 minutes he again successfully went past the defense of opponents and scored the 2nd goal for the team. Hockey Odisha again scored two back to back goals in the 11th and 12th minute coming from the stick of Sudhir Kujur and Amit Chirmako respectively. The team added another couple of goals in the 14th and 18th minute taking the score card to 6-0 at the end of first half.</p>

<p>The second half witnessed the same story with Hockey Odisha continuing its goal scoring spree. They immediately went on the attack and scored its 7th goal just 2 minutes into the second half with Sudhir Kujur scoring again for the team. The team added 3 more goals in a span of 8 minutes and coming in the 44th, 47th and 51st minute and taking the score to 10-0. Kerala by now was completely in the backfoot trying to come back into the game. They finally scored in 64th minute with Imnad Farshid scoring through a field goal. Hockey Odisha added 2 more goals in the 68th and 69th minute and winning the match 12-1.</p>

<p>Pool A match of Chhattisgarh and Tamil Nadu saw Chhattisgarh winning the match 3-1. Chhattisgarh opened the scorecard in the 8th minute with Prafool Kullu scored a field goal. This was the sole goal of the first half and the scorecard reading 1-0. In the second half Tamil Nadu equalized the game in the 52nd minute when M Abbas Ali scored a field goal. Chhattisgarh immediately took stock of the match and scored two goals in a span of 5 minutes and which came in the 65th and 70th minute.</p>

<p>Glasgow: Indian team gave a good fight in a close match against Belgium in the classification match of the Champions Challenge 1 played in Glasgow, Scotland today.</p>

<p>Indian team was defending very well from the start of the match in the first half. In the 20th minute of the game, Captain of Belgium Charlotte de Vos scored the first goal for the team through a field goal. Soon after in the 25th minute Poonam Rani scored the first goal for the Indian team by converting a penalty corner and levels the score by 1-1. Belgium team came back well and Emilie Sinia scored second goal for the team in 28th minute of the match through a field goal. Indian team defended really well and did not let Belgium score any more goals till the end of the first half.</p>

IPL 7: Kohli and Yuvraj blast RCB victory over Delhi Daredevils

<p>Sharjah: It was a major and crucial partnership between Virat Kohli and Yuvraj Singh which provided a golden chance to celebrate for the Royal Challengers Bangalore. Their partnership kept the foundation for a convincing eight wicket win over the Delhi Dare devils in the second crucial match of the Indian Premiere League match organized here.</p>

<p>RCB achieved the target of 146 with the help of the partnership between Yuvraj with skipper Kohli. Yuvraj made 52 not out in just 29 balls and he played with his full shots and in his style. He finished his score with a strike rate of 179.31.</p>
