Even in Mahabharat age when Kauravas forced the Pandavas to go in exile then their mother Kunti worshipped God Sun for the victory and protection of Pandavas on the advice of Lord Krishna.

This helped the Pandavas to defeat the Kauravas. There is also one story that son the Lord Krishna Shamb suffered from leprosy. He was so much frustrated that he wanted to die. But he heard a Akaashwani that he should offer obeisance to the setting Sun on the sixth and to the rising Sun on the seventh day of Kartik. He performed this worship and got rid of the disease and lived for more hundred years.
