Once king Mahishashur, son of Rambhashur, is granted the boon of immortality from Guru Brahma, he conquers heaven. The helpless god and goddesses call for help and finally Mahishashur is killed by Debi Durga. Chho is the name of a traditional dance drama performed on the occasion of the Chait festival (April-May) in the district adjoining the three states of West Bengal, Bihar and Orissa. Bearing resemblances to Japan’s Kabuki theatre and South India’s Kathkali form, this picturesque masked dance portrays the whole of the Ramayana and Mahabharata as well as stories from the Puranas and day-to-day life.
