Play: Imaan Imaan Paani (We are Drowning)
Inspired by Salvador Dali’s “The Persistence of Memory” and Edvard Munch’s “The Scream”

The Group
Assamese literature has travelled a long way from the Charyapads to the Buronjis and Charitas on Xaanchipaat (Papyrus) to print and digital media. The emergence of e-media is fast changing the distribution landscape of literature around the world. Driven by the opinion that it is high time for Assamese literature to embrace e-media and for this medium to be used to ensure its position as a powerful literary entity in the future, some enthusiastic people met in the virtual world and dreamt of an e-future for Assamese language and literature. The group was later institutionalized into the 'Bhaxa Xahityo Xonmiloni, Axom.' The Xonmiloni is always trying to fulfill its dream by encouraging new talents, digitizing valuable contents, and developing tools towards this goal. The group also wants to be part of a greater cultural landscape that includes performing arts and publishing. Being a part of this drama project is one small step in this direction.
The Play
‘Imaan Imaan Paani,’ is the name of a game played by children in Assam, during a phase when they are still untouched by the turbulence of life. At a time when our world is terrorized by the dehumanizing impacts of intense socio-political upheavals and economic depression, one wants to escape to the imaginary world of myths, legends and tales for solace and relief. Memories of one’s childhood bring back the relevance of such myths and legends as we live our day-to-day lives with them. This is also a situation in which one could be reminded of Salvador Dali and his great canvas “The Persistence of Memory” and of Edvard Munch and his “The Scream”. Using these great works as a base, Imaan Imaan Paani attempts to portray the day-to-day politics of contemporary times.
