know the difference between Wants and Needs

Inspiring Thoughts:
Parenting is an aspect related to the present of children as well as their future and for this it is important that parents always take care of the basic things for the children. After the Corona epidemic, the lockdown and the way the common people had to face the crisis of jobs and savings, it is important for all parents to inculcate the habit of saving in children. And for this, it is most important that we teach children the difference between "Wants and Needs" so that they can understand the difference between the two in life.

The purpose of teaching children "wants" and "needs" is that they are able to take decisions and set priorities for life. The more fun and interactive you make it, the better they will learn.

Remember, this is the foundation on which we build the castle of our children's future. To make kids learn the difference between “Wants and Needs” you can take the help of the following fun and interactive methods which are not only effective but also easy-

1. Explain the difference between needs and wants

Needs: Explain to the kids that needs are things that we absolutely need to survive and function, such as food, water, shelter, clothing and sleep. Explain to them that wants are not always needs but they depend on our will and are not as important for our life as needs. For example, life can be lived without toys, video games, candy or the latest gadgets but it would be very difficult to live without water.

2. Explain the meaning of living in reality:

Always teach kids to live in their reality so that they can understand the difference between fantasy and real life. Take the kid grocery shopping and discuss the things you are buying. Classify items as needs (milk, bread, vegetables) or wants (cookies, candy, soda) to know what they need and what they want. It is also important to understand the difference between luxuries and necessities because a parent can explain the difference between luxuries and necessities beautifully and effectively.

3. Make a chart of needs and wants:

If you make a chart of needs and wants for your child, they will understand better. Remember, the chart will help them understand the difference between the two items. Write items on a board or on flashcards, such as "chocolate", "books", "school bag", "TV", "fruits". Ask the child which of these is a need and which is a want.

Ask them if they are very hungry, what do they want- chocolate or food? "I need a bag for school, but is a designer bag a need or a want?"

4. Set a budget:

Never reveal to your children that you have no shortage of money for them and can buy everything for them. If you are capable enough that you have no shortage of money, then it is even better, but explaining the difference between wants and needs to children is never teaching them to live in scarcity. Always make a budget and give it to the children and tell them how they choose their necessary and desired things within that budget. This will help them understand the value of money and the importance of budgeting.

5. Encourage them to ask questions:

Encourage your child to ask questions about their wishes and needs, but keep in mind that your answer should always be based on practical application. Answer the questions asked about their wishes and needs honestly and patiently so that it can have a great impact on them. Along with this, teach the children to live in scarcity. Apart from needs and wants, also give them moral education and teach them that not everyone has the means to fulfill their needs. Make them kind so that they are inspired to help others.
