Hydrogen Fuel Cell (HFC) technology uses chemical reactions between hydrogen and oxygen (from air) to generate electrical energy, eliminating the use of fossil fuels. </div></span><p></p><p style="text-align: justify;"><span style="font-family: georgia; font-size: large;">Further, the fuel cell technology emits only water, thus cutting down the emission of harmful greenhouse gases along with other air pollutants. The technology, with further adoption and use, is poised to make the world a cleaner place with reduced air pollution levels. The fuel cell is a low temperature PEM (Proton Exchange Membrane) type Fuel Cell that operates at 65-75 degree centigrade, which is suitable for vehicular applications.</span></p><p style="text-align: justify;"><span style="font-family: georgia; font-size: large;">CSIR and KPIT have successfully developed a 10 kWe automotive grade LT-PEMFC fuel cell stack based on CSIR’s know-how. The heart of the PEM fuel cell technology includes the membrane electrode assembly, which is wholly a CSIR knowhow.</span></p><p style="text-align: justify;"><span style="font-family: georgia; font-size: large;"> KPIT brought in their expertise in stack engineering which included light-weight metal bipolar plate and gasket design, development of the balance of plant (BoP), system integration, control software and electric powertrain that enabled running the fuel cell vehicle. However, it is expected that the technology is more suited for commercial vehicles (CV) such as buses and trucks. Battery electric buses/ trucks require a large battery to achieve the desired operating range. In comparison, HFC technology requires a much smaller battery for a very large operating range. Its capacity is around 1.75 Kgs of H2 stored at about 350 bar pressure, the FC vehicle should run for approximately 250 Km range under typical Indian road conditions at moderate speed of 60-65 Km/hr. India's first multi-wavelength satellite, AstroSat, has detected extreme-UV (EUV) light from a galaxy, called AUDFs01, 9.3 billion light-years away from Earth. At the time, our universe was forming stars at its peak rate. Such EUV radiation has enough energy to ionize a hydrogen atom by liberating its electron from the nucleus's influence. The EUV photons emitted by galaxies like AUDFs01 could play a crucial role in reionizing the early universe soon after the Cosmic Dark Age and emitting the first light.</div></span><p></p><p style="text-align: justify;"><span style="font-family: georgia; font-size: medium;">A collaboration of researchers from different countries under the project CEFIPRA funded by Indo-French Centre for the Promotion of Advanced Research (CEFIPRA) a bilateral organization set up by the Department of Science & Technology, Government of India and the Ministry for Europe and Foreign Affairs, Government of France delved into how galaxies like AUDFs01 grow their stellar mass when the first stars and galaxies became visible.</span></p><p style="text-align: justify;"><span style="font-family: georgia; font-size: medium;">The team consisting of Prof. Combes from Observatoire de Paris, Laboratory for Studies of Radiation and Matter in Astrophysics and Atmospheres (LERMA), France, and Prof. Kanak Saha from Inter-University Centre for Astronomy and Astrophysics (IUCAA), India connected by CEFIPRA estimated the recent star-formation rate and mass of the gas reservoir in the galaxy. Star formation rate provides a quantitative measure of the stellar mass growth in galaxies. The typical star formation rate (or gas consumption rate) in those first galaxies is not known. By studying galaxies like AUDFs01 and many more, we could get an idea of how star formation rate, gas consumption rate, and growth of stellar mass in those primitive galaxies. Their work has been recently published in the journal ‘Nature Astronomy’.</span></p><p style="text-align: justify;"><span style="font-family: georgia; font-size: medium;">The multi-wavelength satellite AstroSat, which was launched on September 28, 2015, by the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) has five unique X-ray and ultraviolet telescopes working in tandem and has onboard the UltraViolet Imaging Telescope (UVIT).</span></p><p style="text-align: justify;"><span style="font-family: georgia; font-size: medium;">According to Prof. Saha, the redshift gap from 0.4 to 2.5 remained barren until the wide-field UltraViolet Imaging Telescope (UVIT) onboard AstroSat made its first discovery of AUDFs01 at redshift 1.42. The galaxy is not only bridging the gap between the low and high redshift regime at present, but it is also the beginning of a whole new exploration of star-forming galaxies at EUV wavelength. This extreme UV wavelength regime is crucial to understand models of the stellar population, especially the massive, hot stars in early galaxies.</span></p><p style="text-align: justify;"><span style="font-family: georgia; font-size: medium;">AUDFs01 is the first example of a leaking galaxy with clumpy morphology. This galaxy has four clumps and, perhaps, typical of star-forming galaxies in this redshift range. The current version of the AUDF-south (AUDFs) can be used to detect a number of such EUV galaxies from redshift 1 and 2, when the cosmic star-formation rate had its peak, and thus, AstroSat may allow further to refine the scenario of cosmic reionization.</span></p><p style="text-align: justify;"><span style="font-family: georgia; font-size: medium;">“While technology is often developed and adopted keeping in view local needs, deep science is often global requiring strong international collaborations such as this one supported by CEFIPRA. solutions to problems in and around them. Government efforts are triggering
this imagination and broadening the base of the pyramid of innovation that
encourages children to come up with solutions for day to day problems based on
science and technology. Such ideas are being solicited by the Department of
Science and Technology (DST), and meritorious ideas are rewarded with the award
money of Rs 10,000 with option of showcasing it to district, state, and
national level exhibition along with mentoring support. </span></p>

<p class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;"><span style="font-family: georgia; font-size: large;">Lakhs of children from remotest parts of India are coming up
with innovative solutions for problems they encounter – be they be safe kitchen
devices, sustainable bio-toilets, or waste management solutions.</span></p>

<p class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;"><span style="font-family: georgia; font-size: large;">The Million Minds Augmenting National Aspirations and
Knowledge (MANAK) programme was launched by the Department of Science and
Technology (DST) in partnership with the National Innovation Foundation (NIF)
in 2017. It emphasises on the power of ideas in young minds to create a
pipeline of innovative students who can recognise problems and find solutions
to them. </span></p>

<p class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;"><span style="font-family: georgia; font-size: large;">Aiming to harness the power of bright minds spread across 6
lakhs school in the country, DST invites students from government and private
schools to send original and innovative ideas having potential to solve common
problems.</span></p>

<p class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;"><span style="font-family: georgia; font-size: large;">These ideas go through a tough screening and mentoring
process at the school level, district, and state level to be selected for the
National level competitions.</span></p>

<p class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;"><span style="font-family: georgia; font-size: large;">Some very bright ideas often come from the remotest of
places. Last year an award-winning submission was by Sulochana Kakodiya, a
class 8 student from Govt. MS (Girls) Ashram Bichhua in Chhindwara, District in
Madhya Pradesh. Realizing that people suffered health-related issues due to
unhygienic manual cleaning of toilets, she came up with an idea of developing
an automatic toilet cleaning machine. The brushes for cleaning the toilet are
fixed inside the toilet itself, and they can automatically clean the toilet by
rotating them.</span></p>

<p class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;"><span style="font-family: georgia; font-size: large;">A personal problem triggered the innovative spark in Sayan
Akhtar Shaik, a class 9th student of Government Senior Secondary School, Neil
Island of South Andaman. His mother suffered a cut in her finger while she was
trying to open the plastic cap by pulling the nylon thread, which is attached
with the LPG cylinder. To resolve this problem, encountered in most households
once and for all, he developed a plastic (safety) cap opener of LPG cylinder.</span></p>

<p class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;"><span style="font-family: georgia; font-size: large;">More than 3.8 lakh students from all States and Union
Territories of the country have submitted their ideas in 2019, and the number
is increasing every year. Out of these, a few are provided with financial
support of Rs 10,000 each for developing prototypes. After a series of DLEPC (District
Level Exhibition and Project Competition) and subsequent SLEPC (State Level
Exhibition and Project Competition), some of them are selected to exhibit their
ideas at a national level competition.</span></p>

<p class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;"><span style="font-family: georgia; font-size: large;"><o:p> </o:p>This year online nominations for 2020-21 have resumed from
1st June 2020. Since students are not able to attend schools due to COVID 19,
DST has encouraged them to use this time for generation of innovative ideas
which can be submitted to the online portal www.inspireawards-dst.gov.in.</span></p>

While people living along the path annular eclipse passing through Anupgarh, Suratgarh, Sirsa, Jakhal, Kurukshetra, Yamunanagar, Dehradun, Tapowan and Joshimath will be able to see the annular phase, people in rest of India can witness a partial eclipse. </font></div><div style="text-align: justify;"><font face="times" size="5"><br /></font></div><div style="text-align: justify;"><font face="times" size="5">When Moon comes between the Sun and Earth, the shadow falls on the surface of the Earth. The Sun is entirely covered by the Moon for a brief period. Those places that are engulfed by the dark, dense umbral shadow of the Moon experience the total solar eclipse. In the regions that plunge into the soft diffused penumbral shadow of the Moon experience the partial eclipse. In all solar eclipse the Sun, Moon and Earth may not be perfectly aligned, and then we only have a partial eclipse. When the three celestial bodies happen to be in a straight line, we have Total solar eclipse. </font></div><div style="text-align: justify;"><font face="times" size="5"><br /></font></div><div style="text-align: justify;"><font face="times" size="5">"Annular solar eclipse is a particular case of the total solar eclipse. Like the total solar eclipse, the Moon is aligned with the Sun. However, on that day, the apparent size of the Moon happens to be a wee smaller than the Sun.  Hence the Moon covers the central part of the Sun, and the rim of the Sun appear like a 'ring of fire' in the sky for a very brief moment" explains Samir Dhurde of The Inter-University Centre for Astronomy and Astrophysics, Pune.</font></div><div style="text-align: justify;"><font face="times" size="5"><br /></font></div><div style="text-align: justify;"><font face="times" size="5">The distance between the Earth and the Moon at the moment of the eclipse can dictate the type of eclipse that will take place. The distance between the Earth and the Moon is always changing due to the egg-shaped elliptical orbit of the Moon. This means that there are times where it is closer to the Earth and appears slightly bigger in the sky and times where it is farther away and appears somewhat smaller in the sky. Coincidentally, during the eclipse that takes place on June 21, 2020, the apparent size of the Moon is smaller than that of the Sun by 1%. </font></div><div style="text-align: justify;"><font face="times" size="5"><br /></font></div><div style="text-align: justify;"><font face="times" size="5">At the onset of the solar eclipse, Sun gives a characteristic appearance of a bitten apple. A small part of the Sun is covered by the disc of the Moon. After that, slowly and steadily the disc of the Moon embraces larger and larger part of the Sun. On a narrow track that the Moon's shadow traces on Earth during an annular solar eclipse, people can see the Moon traversing on the Sun and covering the central part. As the Moon is not able to block out the entire Sun, a bright ring of sunlight around the Moon will be visible. There are special goggles made for looking at the Sun.  These goggles filter the sunlight for safe viewing. "Often the Public Outreach and Education Committee of Astronomical Society of India and other astronomical institutions/ planetariums and other science popularisation agencies usually make arrangements for safe viewing of the eclipse. However, due to the lockdown this time, we are not able to make solar filters available. Further, we strongly advise people not to gather in large numbers to view the eclipse given the pandemic situation. There are easy tips for viewing the eclipse from the safety of your home" says Arvind Paranjpye, Director, Nehru Planetarium, Mumbai. </font></div><div style="text-align: justify;"><font face="times" size="5">Allying rumours that the eclipse will mark the end of coronavirus,  Aniket Sule said "Solar eclipse is caused when the Moon comes in front of the Sun for a short time. As seen from Earth eclipses occur somewhere in the Earth 2 to 5 times a year. Eclipses do not impact microorganisms on Earth. Likewise there no danger in eating of stepping out during an eclipse. Nor is viewing the Sun's image on the surface of the water.  </font></div><div style="text-align: justify;"><font face="times" size="5">Welders glass #13 or # 14 can be used to see the Sun directly with naked eyes.</font></div><div style="text-align: justify;"><font face="times" size="5">Make a pinhole in a card sheet and hold it under the Sun.  At some distance, keep a screen of white paper.  Image of the Sun can be seen on this sheet. By adjusting the gap between the sheet and the screen, the image can be made larger.</font></div><div style="text-align: justify;"><font face="times" size="5">Look at the shadow of a bush or a tree. The prediction made by NCPOR is based on a 16-year-long satellite-based observation that covered an area of 60,000 sq. km across the AIS. Scientists feel that this study would help understand the ongoing changes in the ocean and atmospheric forces better.</font></div><div style="text-align: justify;"><font face="trebuchet" size="4"><br /></font></div><div style="text-align: justify;"><font face="trebuchet" size="4"> The floating sheets of ice called the ice shelves play a multi-faceted role in maintaining the stability of a glacier. Ice shelves connect a glacier to the landmass. The ice sheet mass balance, sea stratification, and bottom water formation are important parameters for the balancing of a glacier. Latent and sensible heat processes do play important roles here. </font></div><div style="text-align: justify;"><font face="trebuchet" size="4"><br /></font></div><div style="text-align: justify;"><b><font face="trebuchet" size="4">What is Amery Ice Shelf (AIS)</font></b></div><div style="text-align: justify;"><font face="trebuchet" size="4">The AIS is one of the largest glacier drainage basins in the world, located on the east coast of Antarctica, at about 70ºS Latitude, 70ºE Longitude. The AIS dynamics and mass balance help in understanding the changes in the global climate scenario.</font></div><div style="text-align: justify;"><font face="trebuchet" size="4"><br /></font></div><div style="text-align: justify;"><font face="trebuchet" size="4">The insulation of ice shelves from atmospheric forcing is dependent on a temperature gradient that the ocean cavity beneath the ice shelves provides. It is the pressure exerted by the ice shelves upon the ocean cavity that determines this temperature gradient.</font></div><div style="text-align: justify;"><font face="trebuchet" size="4"><br /></font></div><div style="text-align: justify;"><font face="trebuchet" size="4"> There is always a stress on the sea ice and ice sheets itself plays an indirect role in reducing the amplitude of the ocean swell. This is assisted by the freezing atmospheric temperature, which is capable of promoting a change in the morphology of ice shelves.</font></div><div style="text-align: justify;"><font face="trebuchet" size="4"><br /></font></div><div style="text-align: justify;"><b><font face="trebuchet" size="4"> What Study Says</font></b></div><div style="text-align: justify;"><font face="trebuchet" size="4">NCPOR carried out this study based on the satellite data collected from 2001 to 2016. The data were collected during the austral (relating to the southern hemisphere) summer months of January to March to understand the advancement of AIS extension and the influence of ocean atmospheric forcing in East Antarctica. The NCOPOR scientists observed a spatio-temporal change in the ice shelf as reflected by the extension of the Pridze and Mackenzie and the extension of a 200-km stretch between Mackenzie Bay (68.5ºS Latitude; 70.2ºE Longitude) and the Sandefjord Bay (69.65ºS Latitude; 74.3ºE Longitude), which is a part of the AIS.</font></div><div style="text-align: justify;"><font face="trebuchet" size="4"><br /></font></div><div style="text-align: justify;"><font face="trebuchet" size="4"> It becomes clear from the study that the AIS is losing its stability owing to the impact of a downstream giant glacial drainage system over the past 19 years, thereby advancing the ice shelf boundaries due to higher freezing rates than basal melting.</font></div><div style="text-align: justify;"><font face="trebuchet" size="4"> </font></div><div style="text-align: justify;"><font face="trebuchet" size="4">NCPOR has also estimated the rate at which ice shelves have extended for the last three years (2017-2019). The AIS extended by about 550 m in 2017, 1470 m in 2018, and 2200 m in 2019. If this continues, it is entirely possible that in the next six years (2021 to 2026), the positions of the ice shelf would closely coincide with the actual boundary conditions.</font></div><div style="text-align: justify;"><font face="trebuchet" size="4"><br /></font></div><div style="text-align: justify;"><font face="trebuchet" size="4"> NCPOR observations also revealed a critical cooling of the sea surface temperature (SST), resulting in an advancement of the ice shelf by 88% in the past 15 years. These changes would contribute in a major way to climate variability.</font></div><div style="text-align: justify;"><font face="trebuchet" size="4"> </font></div><div style="text-align: justify;"><b><font face="trebuchet" size="4">Background</font></b></div><div style="text-align: justify;"><font face="trebuchet" size="4">Referring to the NCPOR study from 2001 to 2016, Dr. Avinash Kumar, a senior scientist at NCPOR who is involved in the research, said: "In the background of the global warming scenario, the study reveals that the advancement in the predicted ice shelf extent closely corresponds with the actual extent. The study clearly demonstrated the application of satellite observations and statistical techniques methods for the determination and validation; the reconstruction of the past; and the prediction of the future dynamism of ocean heat fluctuation and Antarctic Amery ice shelf mass shifting-extent. These are some of the groundbreaking methods crucial for monitoring and quantification of climate change effects and its consequences. It has been designed to sanitise mobile phones, iPads, laptops, currency notes, cheque leafs, challans, passbooks, paper, envelopes, etc.</font></div><div><font face="times" size="4"><br /></font></div><div><font face="times" size="4">The DRUVS cabinet is having contactless operation which is very important to contain the spread of virus. The proximity sensor switches, clubbed with drawer opening and closing mechanism, makes its operation automatic and contactless.</font></div><div><font face="times" size="4"><br /></font></div><div><font face="times" size="4"> It provides 360 degree exposure of UVC to the objects placed inside the cabinet. Bundles of currency notes can be sanitised using DRUVS, however disinfection of each currency notes using it will be a time consuming process. For that purpose, a sanitising technique has been developed, where one has to just place the loose currency notes at the input slot of the device. <span style="font-size: large;">Dr. Ramendra Sundar Dey and his team from INST have explored a highly active Oxygen Reduction Reaction (ORR) electrocatalyst based on binary transition metals Iron (Fe), and Manganese (Mn) and N-doped porous carbon (Fe, Mn, N-FGC), derived from fish gills (FG) acquired as animal waste, which has a unique porous structure and could provide conductive carbon networks after heat treatment and could be an efficient electrode material. The catalyst was able to show active oxygen reduction reaction in a wide range of pH (pH < 1, 7, and >13) and outperformed the commercial Pt/C catalyst.</span></div>

<span style="font-size: large;">They fabricated a homemade rechargeable Zn−air battery (ZAB) with the catalyst as an air cathode, which showed almost stable charge−discharge voltage plateaus after rigorous cycling for a long duration. It surpassed the commercial Pt/C based ZAB performance. The scientists found that the reason behind the outstanding performance of this catalyst is the presence of Fe−Mn based binary moiety, which is actually beneficial for the Oxygen (O2) binding and boosting Oxygen Reduction Reaction (ORR) catalytic performances in alkaline medium by weakening the Oxygen-Oxygen bonds.</span></div>

<span style="font-size: large;">Dr. Eswar Reddy and his students Deepak and Raghubar Singh at IIA in their study published recently in the Astrophysical Journal Letters and Monthly Notices of royal astronomical society (MNRAS) discovered a number of super Li-rich giants which have Li quantity which is equal to or in some cases, more than 10 times the present value, A(Li) =3.2 dex ( measured in logarithmic scale relative to hydrogen).</span></div>

<span style="font-size: large;">Researchers at the Indian Institute of Astrophysics (IIA), an autonomous institute under the Department of Science &Technology, Govt. of India, have discovered hundreds of Li-rich giant stars indicating that Li is being produced in the stars and accounts for its abundance in the interstellar medium. They have also associated such Li enhancement with central He-burning stars, also known as red clump giants, thereby opening up new vistas in the evolution of the red giant stars.</span></div>

<span style="font-size: large;">Lithium (Li), is one of the three primordial elements, apart from Hydrogen and Helium (He), produced in the big bang nucleosynthesis (BBN) whose models predict primordial Li abundance (A(Li) ~2.7~dex). However, the present measurement of Li in the interstellar medium and very young stars is about 4 times more than the primordial value. Thus, identifying sources of Li enrichment in our Galaxy has been a great interest to researchers to validate Big Bang Nucleosynthesis as well as a stellar mixing process.</span></div>

<span style="font-size: large;"> Apart from reactions, in which high energy cosmic ray particles bombard with heavier nuclei such as carbon and oxygen-producing lighter particles such as Li, stars are also proposed as likely Li source in the Galaxy. In general, stars are considered as Li sinks. This means that the original Li, with which stars are born, only gets depleted over stars’ life-time as Li burns at relatively very low temperatures of about 2.5X106 K – a range which is easily encountered in stars.</span></div>

<span style="font-size: large;">The team embarked on cracking this long-standing problem in stellar astrophysics. They followed a two-fold strategy by increasing the sample by systematically searching for high Li among low mass evolved stars in the Galaxy and determining the exact evolutionary phase of these high Li abundance stars. By employing data from large scale ground and space missions, they discovered hundreds of Li-rich giants. Though their study increased the number of Li-rich giants by many-fold Li-rich giants still accounts for only about 1 in 100 in the Galaxy.</span></div>

<span style="font-size: large;">The researchers determined the evolutionary phase of these giants by analyzing relative positions of thousands of stars using their temperature and luminosity and also subjecting their independent data set to atmospheric oscillations analysis using data from Kepler Space Telescope, a NASA mission for discovering planets. By determining their characteristic frequency and period spacing of pressure (p)-modes and gravity (g)-modes, they could differentiate between the stars that have a He-burning core, or inert He ash at the center due to Hydrogen fusion reaction.</span></div>

<span style="font-size: large;"> Importantly, they showed for the first time that the Li enhancement in giants is associated only with central He-burning stars, which are also known as red clump giants. Charging should be as easy as re-fuelling a conventional vehicle.</span></div>
