New Delhi: Every year during the festival season, there is increase in complaints relating to packaged commodities. Many consumers report mal practices and violation of rules by the traders. Therefore the Weights & Measures wing of the Department of Food Supplies & Consumer Affairs has stepped up enforcement activities to prevent malpractices, sale of commodities in violation of rules and cheating of consumers. 20 special teams have been constituted for this purpose.
The commissioner, Food Supplies and Consumer affairs Shri S. S. Yadav informed that as per the Packaged Commodities Rules, 2011, each pack of such a commodity must prominently contain the following information like name and address of the manufacturers and packers. For imported packaged commodity, the package must contain the name and address of the importer.
Common or generic name of the commodity contained in the package. Net quantity of the commodity contained in the package. Where commodity is sold by number, the number of the commodity contained in the package. Month and year in which the commodity is manufactured or pre-packaged or imported. Retail sale price of the package. Where size of the commodity contained in the package are relevant, the dimensions of the commodity contained in the package.
Yadav said that any violation of the above requirement may lead to prosecution under the Legal Metrology Act, 2009.
