New Delhi: With the objective of setting up a unified centre is to help speed up the work-plan charted out for Yamuna’s rejuvenation, the Lt. Governor chaired the meeting of the Governing Body of the “Unified Centre for Rejuvenation of River Yamuna” (Restoration & Beautification) at the Raj Niwas. The meeting was attended by representatives from Ministry of Urban Development, Ministry of Environment & Forest, Ministry of Water Resources, Central Ground Water Board and representatives from PWD, DMRC, DDA and other senior government officers.
The objective of setting up a unified centre is to help speed up the work-plan charted out for Yamuna’s rejuvenation. The three-fold plan to rejuvenate river Yamuna includes Cleaning the river – which is being coordinated by DJB through its interceptor sewage project. Riverfront development – which is being coordinated by the DDA through initiatives such as biodiversity parks, green linkages, recreational spaces etc. Increasing the water supply for Delhi – which requires building reservoirs and sharing of water through inter-state coordination.
The “Unified Centre for Rejuvenation of River Yamuna” (Restoration & Beautification) aims to ensure conservation, protection and rejuvenation of river Yamuna and to promote and secure the requisite development activities in/on/along the river, its floodplains, and its watershed, within the NCT of Delhi.
The Lt. Governor reiterated Delhi Government’s commitment to Yamuna’s rejuvenation and said, “Yamuna development is high on priority for Delhi Government.” He said, “While DJB’s interceptor sewage project shall be able to check 70% of the sewage flow into the river, the sewage from other drains also needs to be intercepted to check pollutants from entering the Yamuna.”
The Lt. Governor instructed Secretary (Environment) to take steps through DPCC to ensure that pollutants, especially from industries, are not allowed to flow into the Yamuna.
