Chhath Puja 2023: After Nahay Khay and Kharna, now its turn for Evenign Ardhya for the Chhath Puja 2023 which will be held on November 19, 2023, According to the Hindi Mythology, it is believed that the Chhath Puja festival finds mention the Rigveda, Vishnu Puran, Bhagwat Puran, Brahm Puran etc. There are many stories heard about this festival. It is said that when Lord Ram returned Ayodhya after killing Ravana, he worshipped Sun God in the evening of the sixth day of Kartik Maas. 

Even in Mahabharat age when Kauravas forced the Pandavas to go in exile then their mother Kunti worshipped God Sun for the victory and protection of Pandavas on the advice of Lord Krishna. This helped the Pandavas to defeat the Kauravas. There is also one story that son the Lord Krishna Shamb suffered from leprosy. 

He was so much frustrated that he wanted to die. But he heard a Akaashwani that he should offer obeisance to the setting Sun on the sixth and to the rising Sun on the seventh day of Kartik. He performed this worship and got rid of the disease and lived for more hundred years.

In a bid to offers the lord Sun devotes visit to the near about area on the bank of river or ponds where devotees and her family gathered to offer Arghya to the setting Sun.

During the celebration of the Evening Offering to the Sun, generally devotees use to decorate the bamboo baskets and a winnow and same is filled with various items including fruits and vegetables.

Chhatth Puja 2023: Simplicity, Purity and Discipline- Know Everything of Chhath Puja

On the day of Kharna or Lohanda, devotees starts their fasts in which even they avoid to single drop of water and they observe a fast for the whole day. After the end of the day, the fast ends in the evening a little after sunset when they worship the Chhatthi Maata. During the worshipping of Chhathi Maiya or Chhathi Mata, devotess use offerings of Rasiao-kheer (rice delicacy), bananas, breads which made in the soil made pot.  From this day onwards, for the next 36 hours, the follower goes on a fast without water.

  • First Day: Nahay-Khay

  • Fourth Day:Suryodaya and Paaran  


First day Nahaay Khaay:

Nahay Khay is the first step to celebrate the Chhatth Puja which is important to get purify the devotees and also the home in a bid to perform the Chhath Puja. Devotees, who use to perform Chhath Puja generally it is lady of the home who perform the Puja, use to take bath and wear fresh/new/clean clothes.

In a bid to bath, generally devotes use to take in the river/ponds and any natural sources however now a days they use to take bath at their home. The main motto is to purify oneself and also make the home sacred for the performing of the Chhath Puja. 

Second day Kharna:  

Kharna is the day when devotees starts their fasts in which even they avoid to single drop of water and they observe a fast for the whole day. The fast ends in the evening a little after sunset when they worship the Chhatthi Maata and they offerings of Rasiao-kheer (rice delicacy), bananas, breads which made in the soil made pot.  From this day onwards, for the next 36 hours, the follower goes on a fast without water.

Third day Sandhya Arghya:

It is the main day in which devotees offers the lord Sun in the evening known as evening offerings. The Chhath Puja is generally celebrated in the near about area on the bank of river or ponds where devotees and her family gathered to offer Arghya to the setting Sun. The entire locality and people use to gather on the bank of the river/pond and it creates an unique sense of celebration which can be termed as a carnival. 


Fourth day Paaran: 

The last day of the long celebration of Chhath puja which ends with the offering to the Arghya to the rising Sun. People with the devotees once again use to gather the same riverbank before sunrise and wait for the sunrise. Paaran is commonly known as the last rituals of the Puja and it is the day when devotees break their fast.
